Where the format came from
A research safeguard became the meme.
The paper “Memeing scientific racism” examined how racialised memes borrow scientific aesthetics and cognitive shortcuts to make ideology feel like evidence. Its harm-minimised figures acquired a second life as a joke format.
The accidental format
The paper showed how harmful memes work without showing the harmful memes themselves. The internet recognized the visual language—and copied it.

- The source materialA 2026 Evolutionary Human Sciences paper studied 68 viral racialised memes from X, including four close case studies.
- 02Method
- Why the originals were withheldTo minimise recirculation of harmful material, the paper kept only general layouts and relative positions while removing offensive text, sensitive imagery, and identifying details.
- 03Mutation
- How the method became the memeAfter the figures circulated on X, people copied their plain drawings, removal labels, and academic captions as a participatory parody format.
This site continues the mutation: preserve the compositional skeleton, make every removal visible, and let the intervention become the joke.Read the open-access paper ↗See the meme history ↗

The memecoin layer
The method became a meme. Then a token.
$ETHICAL is an unaffiliated Solana memecoin built around the format’s strange second life: a harm-minimisation technique turned participatory internet parody. It does not represent or support the paper, its author, Evolutionary Human Sciences, or Cambridge University Press.
